Autumn gardening

Is more about planning than looking at what's here, I always think.  I remembered I wanted more than just yellow tulips, so got sunset skies for the back garden (which faces west) & pastel passion for the tub outside the front door (which faces east).  & more daffs, because they're always lovely. Sunset skies & half the pack of martinette broadcast along the lawn border. Pastel passion & the other half of martinette in the new big tub. 

It was so sunny on Wednesday that I sat in the garden & knitted for half an hour. 
Only half an hour, because despite the sunshine, it was chilly! Which is to be expected at the end of September. 
Photos carefully taken so you can't see the junk in the garden! I went to the dump this morning to get rid of Younger Son's old mattress, & hoped to get Elder Son's old bike he had when he was 11 (which I would have taken to the donation point there) & a chunk of car Elder Son got for a tiny piece he wanted for his car.  But they wouldn't have fit on the mattress, so that will have to wait for another day. Which is a bit annoying, as my plans for the garden involve less junk and more composters.  The compost daleks will have to stay in the alley way a bit longer (although I'm hoping to get Baby Sister to have at least 1 as she finds more garden under extreme overgrowth, & then she can put Guinea pig bedding in there, as we can't put it in our brown bins anymore). 
I'll need to remember to tidy this up for summer, as everything but the ivies are winter & spring plants. But it looks better than the tub I had there before, including actually having a saucer so the water doesn't just run off into the drains before doing any good. 

It was pouring with rain when I took the dog out this morning, & when I cleared & filled the car (what, doesn't everyone keep stuff in their car that has to be moved before going to the dump? Not even the shopping bags?), but had stopped when I took the stuff, & held off till I'd finished gardening. Now raining again, which is a sign to me to make another hot drink & relax for a while before doing the washing up 😉

Dough in the airing cupboard

The last batch of bread I made didn't rise as well as usual, probably because its getting colder now. So I proved the dough in the airing cupboard & after an hour & a half, it was ready to knock back. So now it's in the loaf tins for the 2nd rise. I did notice the yeast says best before 2019, so that could also be a reason! Looking for fresher yeast could be tricky in the new lockdown though. Hopefully, I can get use out of the rest of this lot with more sugar, more yeast & more warmth. I was talking to Younger Son about the bread as he saw me checking the dough in the airing cupboard, & I said I'd put 2 teaspoons of sugar in the mix this time, & he said I was like subway ha ha.  ( Subway's bread is too sweet to count as bread in Ireland  & some has more than 10% sugar!!) Finished my grey socks so I'll do a post about them soon. Now all I have in my yarn projects is my jumper & a head wrap! I could do with some soc

Random thoughts on recycling

It's black bin day here tomorrow. We have 3 bins, blue (recycling) & brown (compostable garden waste) are emptied 1 week, and black (rubbish, burnt for energy). I've always tried to recycle as much as I can - when Elder Son was a little boy at preschool, I'd load up the cans & jars into the shopping trolley, take him to preschool, queue at the Post Office to get my income support money & go to the supermarket. Recyclables into their appropriate bins, go into the supermarket & do the shopping, get home & put it away (or at least frozen & chilled stuff) before going to get him after his 2 1/2 hours at preschool. This was when we only had the black bins, of course. It's much easier now. But sometimes it's still difficult. We don't use dairy milk, & I've not seen (affordable) non - dairy milk round here. One can make it, but then it wouldn't have the added calcium. So there are always tetra packs to dispose of. The supermarket use

October half term

Is involving lots of sitting.  Younger Son had his covid 19 booster on Monday, so that was lots of sitting with him as we waited to see the nurse, & more sitting waiting for his 15 minutes before we could leave.  Tuesday, Elder Son had a wisdom tooth taken out under sedation, so needed me to drive him to Colchester & back again.  That was over an hour in the dentists' waiting room.  And today, it was take my car to the garage to have the splitter cable tied back up.  The lovely garage man didn't charge me anything for their work! So they get one of the bags of chocolates I'd got for the bin men, & when we get a new (2nd hand) splitter, it will go there for fixing on. These are going to be cable socks, as they'll use up the yarn left from a pair I made very quickly as I cast on last Tuesday morning, & did the kitchener stitch & wove in all the ends on Sunday evening.  Very quick knit, helped by binge watching Star Trek Voyager
