Good car!

Yay, the car passed it's MOT without any work needed! It did have a mini service, oil change etc at the time it was in the garage, so cost more than just an MOT, but is safer to drive as well as being legally safe to drive. 

I dropped it off at the garage this morning, & Elder Son met me there & we took the dog off for a walk around the lake before heading out to the Farm Shop. The swans have 4 cygnets this year - I say cygnets as they still have their juvenile plumage, but they look as big as the adults to me. I'm not getting close enough to swans to see who's biggest!

The Farm Shop do all sorts of refills as well as fruit, veg, bread etc. Today, we got refills of washing up liquid, local rapeseed oil & local rapeseed oil flavoured with garlic. The oils refills are new as we only saw them last time, so of course didn't have bottles for them. Elder Son got a chocolate croissant while some wallflowers & pansies jumped into my basket!

We then did a couple of hours at the allotment, strimming the grass & chainsawing plum suckers. Y'know, I say 'we' but I did neither... I did clear the tomato plants & weeds from 2 beds & weed half of another as well as pruning the fennel to stop it seeding everywhere.  So it all looks better there, and manageable. 

Younger Son did not come with us on these important journeys (though I'd have spent more in the Farm Shop if he had), nor on the trip into the town centre for Elder Son's hair cut. I went in the charity bookshops, & found nothing I wanted, which is okay as it's chance there. I also found no trousers I wanted in M&S, which is annoying as I need 1 or 2 more pairs of trousers, & found that one gets no phone signal in M&S when I had a missed call from Younger Son's doctor's secretary needing to rearrange an appointment. Sigh. Will play phone chase for a few days...

Dough in the airing cupboard

The last batch of bread I made didn't rise as well as usual, probably because its getting colder now. So I proved the dough in the airing cupboard & after an hour & a half, it was ready to knock back. So now it's in the loaf tins for the 2nd rise. I did notice the yeast says best before 2019, so that could also be a reason! Looking for fresher yeast could be tricky in the new lockdown though. Hopefully, I can get use out of the rest of this lot with more sugar, more yeast & more warmth. I was talking to Younger Son about the bread as he saw me checking the dough in the airing cupboard, & I said I'd put 2 teaspoons of sugar in the mix this time, & he said I was like subway ha ha.  ( Subway's bread is too sweet to count as bread in Ireland  & some has more than 10% sugar!!) Finished my grey socks so I'll do a post about them soon. Now all I have in my yarn projects is my jumper & a head wrap! I could do with some soc

Good Friday 2021

This year's hot cross buns come to my kitchen via Marguerite Patten's Everyday Cookbook, using a veganised rich dough (soya milk, baking marge & egg replacer powder instead of milk, butter & egg), wholemeal bread flour (because the white flour is self raising) & 6 oz of mixed dried fruit. The recipe makes '16 - 20' & I made 16 (I know you could count them, but some might have evaporated from the cooling rack before the photo shoot) since it was easy to keep halving the dough till I got to 16. But I'm glad I didn't go for 20, as they're jolly small!  I guess they're better for being small, but I'm used to the commercial ones that are twice the size! And I clearly didn't use this recipe last year since last year, I only just got 12 on the cooking rack and the crosses are piped on. October half term

Is involving lots of sitting.  Younger Son had his covid 19 booster on Monday, so that was lots of sitting with him as we waited to see the nurse, & more sitting waiting for his 15 minutes before we could leave.  Tuesday, Elder Son had a wisdom tooth taken out under sedation, so needed me to drive him to Colchester & back again.  That was over an hour in the dentists' waiting room.  And today, it was take my car to the garage to have the splitter cable tied back up.  The lovely garage man didn't charge me anything for their work! So they get one of the bags of chocolates I'd got for the bin men, & when we get a new (2nd hand) splitter, it will go there for fixing on. These are going to be cable socks, as they'll use up the yarn left from a pair I made very quickly as I cast on last Tuesday morning, & did the kitchener stitch & wove in all the ends on Sunday evening.  Very quick knit, helped by binge watching Star Trek Voyager
